The place of Judaism philo's thought: Israel, Jews and Proselytes
From Biblical times and indeed throughout the history of Judaism, one can trace a persistent tension between particularism and universalism. To be sure, one can define these terms differently and examine the tensions between them within different contexts. In Jewish history, however, one might well argue that in one way or another, the two opposing tendencies derive from a fundamental belief established at the very beginning of the Hebrew Scriptures, in the Book of Genesis, This is belief that the Creator and Father of the entire universe is also the particular, national God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their descendant people, Israel.
