The self-disclosure of Jesus: the modern debate., c.1-3
In the heavenly vision of Stephen reposes the Bible's confident assertion that "the Son of man" has completed the work the Father gave Him, and has been exalted to the position of honor, to the right hand of the Father. From Luke's historical vantage point it served as evidence of the acceptance of the earthly mission of Jesus of Nazareth. Even before these events we find these same words frequently being uttered by Jesus Himself in the Gospels (81 times), this self-disclosure bearing witness to His concomitant knowledge of His unique role in redemption. But outside of the Gospels it was rarely taken up in the divine record that was to bear witness to His person and work, and seldom was this messianic title used in the witness of the early church. At a time of increased speculation in all things apocalyptic, the Gospels note Jesus' open attachment to such an obviously apocalyptic title. It is then true that all but one sense awaits its fulfillment: the apocalyptic one.
