The discovery of writing and in particular of alphabetic writing, marked a turning-point in the development of civilization. In fact it marked the dividing line between pre-history and his-tory proper. It enable mankind to develop a new manner of communication, amplifying the traditional word-of-mouth method. Communication was now possible across both space (because writing could be sent from one place to another) and time ( because writing could be preserved for later generations)..
