Caesars and saints : the evolution of Christian..
This is a very sound short history of relations between the Roman imperial government of late antiquity and the early Catholic Church. The author is a gifted writer as well as a competent historical scholar (too rare a combination in our age or any other) and has written an attractive account of what must always be deemed one of history's decisive contests. The portrait of St. Irenaus of Lyons was especially compelling. I would enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone seeking an introduction to the subject.
