Understanding Exodus: the heritage of biblical Israel
The conception of a book posited here is: an organization of literary units meant to convey a complex ideational message. Articulation into subunits and organization into a coherent whole are the essential characteristics.
By ideational message we do not mean the mind of the author his ideology, his wordview, or even his intention, but only what is found in the components of the book and implied by the manner of their disposition. While extrinsic information may bear on the message, and the ideology or meaning of elements in the book, the primary object of understanding is the book's own message, and that must be gathered in the final analysis from the book itself.
