Calvin's doctrine of man
Man's true knowledge of himself is reflexive of his knowledge of God. He is made to know God, and to live in dependence on God's grace. Therefore, only when a man so responds to the Word of grace that he becomes what he is made to be, can he begin to know his true nature. Christian self-knowledge differs from ministers to his humility by revealing his creaturehood and wretchedness, but does not allow him to despair, or despite his humanity, for he is a creature of God.
