The way to Nicea
This is a study, by the author of Insight and Method in Tehology, of the development of trinitarian theology from New Testament times to the fourth-century council of Nicea. Bernard Lonergan leads the reader behind the words and images used by Judaeo-Christians, Gnostics, Adoptionists and Arians, by Tertullian, Origen, Athanasius and other, to an understanding of their dialectical progress. Struggling with mystery, gradually, by twists and turns, they arrived at a clear dogmatic definition of the Son's consubstantiality, with the Father. More significant, however, than the emergence of a particular Christian dogma itself, a development which, as Lonergan argues, contemporary theology must critically assimilate if it is to build for the future on the firm foundations of the past.
